Frequently Asked Questions
Is hypnosis real?
Yes, hypnosis is real and has been widely researched and documented for over a century. Many people have experienced the effects of hypnosis, and it is used as a therapeutic tool in various settings, including medical, dental, and psychological practices. There is an ever-growing body of evidence that supports its effectiveness in addressing a range of issues, such as anxiety, stress, phobias, pain management, and habit modification.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a relaxed state of consciousness in which a person is generally highly focused and becomes more open to change. Hypnosis can be induced through verbal or visual cues and is often useful for a variety of therapeutic purposes, such as reducing anxiety or quitting smoking. Humans access this natural state throughout the day and before and after sleep. During hypnosis, you are relaxed, aware, and always remain fully in control. That is why any good hypnotist will tell you that all hypnosis is ultimately a guided form of self-hypnosis. This is why hypnosis can be such an amazing tool, when all systems are working together in unison it is much easier to accomplish your goals.
A good analogy is that the conscious mind is like the programs on a computer. Whereas the subconscious mind acts more like the actual computer. The programs we open only are able to run because the computer gives the program the resources needed to operate that software. Just as a computer can be programmed to perform or no longer perform specific tasks, the mind can be guided through hypnosis to access and modify certain thought patterns and behaviors at the computer (subconscious) level.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
Everyone can be hypnotized. It happens naturally every single day. However, not everyone can be hypnotized to the same extent, as the ability to be hypnotized varies among individuals and depends on factors such as suggestibility, imagination, motivation, and mental and emotional state. However, most people can experience some level of hypnotic state, and the majority of people can benefit from changes made even at the mildest levels of hypnosis. Some people may be highly suggestible and enter a deep hypnotic state easily, while others may have difficulty reaching that lower hypnotic state. It is also important to note that hypnosis is a cooperative process and requires the willingness and active participation of the person being hypnotized.
Can I get "stuck" in hypnosis?
No, you cannot get "stuck" in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind that can be easily exited at any time by the person being hypnotized. In a hypnotic state, a person remains aware of their surroundings and can choose to stop the hypnotic experience at any time. During hypnosis, the person being hypnotized remains in control of their thoughts and actions, and can always choose to end the hypnotic state if they desire. It is also important to note that hypnosis is a cooperative process, and the hypnotist can only suggest or guide, but cannot make the person do anything against their will.
Is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner who follows ethical guidelines and uses modern protocols. There have been very few reported adverse effects associated with hypnosis. In those rare cases, they are usually minor and temporary. For example, very rarely people may experience headaches, dizziness, or confusion after hypnosis.
How will I know I am hypnotized?
You will typically experience certain physical and mental changes when you are in a hypnotic state, although these can vary from person to person. Some common signs of successful hypnosis include:
Deep relaxation: A feeling of calm and relaxation often spreads throughout the body in a hypnotic state.
Focused attention: Your attention becomes highly focused and may become absorbed by the hypnotic suggestions or imagery.
Altered perceptions: Time can seem to speed up or slow down, and you may experience changes in your sensory perceptions (e.g. sounds may seem louder or softer).
Decreased critical thinking: Your critical thinking may become suppressed, allowing you to accept the hypnotic suggestions more readily.
Increased suggestibility: You may become more open to suggestions and more willing to consider new ways of thinking and behaving.
Some people may not experience some of these signs or may only experience select ones to a limited extent, as the experience of hypnosis can vary greatly from person to person.
Will I lose control or reveal secrets during hypnosis?
No, you will not lose control during hypnosis. Hypnosis is a cooperative process, and the person being hypnotized remains in control of their thoughts and actions at all times. The hypnotist can only suggest or guide, but cannot make the person do anything against their will. During hypnosis, you remain aware of your surroundings and can choose to stop the hypnotic experience at any time.
In fact, the purpose of hypnosis is often to empower the person being hypnotized by helping them to access their own inner resources and make positive changes in their thoughts and behaviors. Hypnosis can help you feel more in control of your mind and body and can be a valuable tool for overcoming a wide range of issues and challenges.
